[James is genuinely surprised to get a text from Daryl, but it's not unwelcome. He hasn't reached out much at all yet regarding Harry's disappearance, and has mostly been wallowing on his own. He brought it up with Blake though, since Harry and Blaine seemed to go missing at the same time.]

[Nothing changes without you changing it, Daryl knows that, and so while he has no fucking clue how in the hell James is gonna pull it off, he's not gonna rain on his parade.

[Absolutely he's hurting. His son is gone, just as he was beginning to really feel like a father. But, this is how James deals with hurt. He laughs. He lets it roll off him. He makes it about anyone but himself. And most of all, he desperately tries to proceed as though everything is normal, because then maybe it will be. It comes off as strength, but it's really just him trying especially hard to cope.

[There are worse ways to cope (withdrawing completely or putting yourself in dangerous situations are two Daryl is intimately familiar with), and so really, James's got it right.

[He calls back relatively quickly, not thinking much about the tone. He assumes it must be a Resistance thing though - he and Blake don't talk often outside of it, unless his Mirror has done something unspeakably horrible. So it's got to be either about the Resistance or about something his Mirror's done, and given the last event he would much rather assume the first one.]

But rather than jump to conclusions, he mods in the direction of the woods and starts walking. They'll have more privacy the farther they are from the mansion.]
